Haiku For Rusty The Dog by Bonnie Ditlevsen

Haiku for Rusty the Dog

RustytheDog
Gnawing sounds on rawhide
the one-eyed shelter dog, saved,
his thick coat now groomed

Donated land, then
a shed built for homeless dogs
Lisa perseveres

Who shot this poor boy
in the eye? Then “doctored it”
instead of a vet?

Fractured skull, the bullet
maybe even still in there;
thousands to fix it.

He can’t judge depths, so
he bumps into glass doors, walls,
furniture, and us

I don’t see his flaws
when stroking his thick brown fur
his one good eye closed

Concussive damage
from a senseless gunshot wound
has altered his life

His resilience
speaks to me through his quiet stare
four-year survivor
